ISAIGON (UPI) — Ameri-can warships in the Gulf of Tonkin began shelling military targets in North Vietnam today for the first time in the war.!JMilitary spokesmen said the ships bombarded rail-yard and storage areas in a further escalation of thepressure against the Hanoi regime.Continuing monsoon weather, which blankets much of North Vietnam with thick cloud layers and hampers air strikes, apparently prompted the decision to broaden use of American naval power.The announcement said the naval gunfire was directed at “primary targets supporting the infiltration of men and equipment into the South.”The first announced attackinvolved the U.S.S.
