Ninety-fourth Infantry Division on the Saar River, Germany, Feb. 24.—UP)—The Americans seized more than 200 prisoners on the east bank of the Saar river at Serrig, two and a half miles south of Saarburg yesterday, and found they were mostly from the Volkssturm—Hitler's people’s army.Major Carl Schofield, St. Albans, Vt., said that ‘‘one Volkssturmer claimed he was hauled from bed in the middle of the night and put into . a bunker. Shortly afterwards our doughboys hauled him out.Seventy of- these over-age Germans were ordered to guard sector a mile and eight-tenths wide.“They fired a few rounds/* said Schofield, “some of which were just as effective as those fired by good soldiers, but they gave up quickly when the doughboys reached the immediate vicinity/*One high-ranking Volkssturm officer in charge of 15 bunkers said 90 per cent of his men were veterans of the first world war. They were given only rifles and machine guns and were denied artillery.Private First Class Nick Yurick, St. Louis, Mo., acted as translator for a non-German who said he was captured by the Germans in 1941, had been forced to dig emplacements, and was willing to don an American uniform right now and fight the Germans.Sixty-eight of the prisoners were credited to Captain Lee Boyer, Berryville, Ark., and Lieutenant Bernard York, Hazel ton, Pa. They were browsing around a town when they saw two Germans.“Any more here? asked Boyer. The Germans said there were six more in a house across the road, and Boyer sent one to get them. When they all reassembled, a German non-com reported there were 60 more in other nearby houses. He was sent after them, Boyer and York warning him to return promptly with the 60. They did.
