Pioneers, from Page 9finished.In late 1935 the firstM130 Martin flying boat was delivered to Pan Am, and was named the China Clipper. On October 21, 1935. the Martin flew from Baltimore toMiami, to Acapulco, to San Diego, with 19 reporters on board. The next day they went on the San Francisco. The world was fascinated - it was time for the first regular service to the Orient! Four million people around the world listened to the radio broadcasts of the inaugural ceremony. Over the radiowas heard:1. Pan American Airwaysocean air base. Honolulu,Hawaii, Standing by.2. Pan American Airwaysocean air base, MidwayIsland. Standing by.3. Pan American Airwaysocean base. Ahead was the bay bridge, still underconstruction with cables.ropes and scaffolding below it. There was no choice but to fly under the bridge, which was done withoutmishap, and the planedisappeared into the westernsky. The whole world was amazed with visions of quick long distance travel, and a movie was made that year featuring Humphrey Bogartas captain of the ChinaClipper,Next came routes to Lisbon, Portugal via the Azores, on tc* Marseilles and then to Southampton. England the famous port for passenger ships. (Rememberthat those airplanes had norestrooms, plumbing for water, food services, orsleeping facilities)Meanwhile, the ultimate flying boat was being built. Ordered in the spring of 1936, the first Boeing 314 was delivered in March 1939. It was the largest airplane in the world at that time. Its propellers cut an arc nearly 15 feet in diameter. It had a maximum range of 4,275 miles, almost twice that of other airplanes. Cruising speed was 160 mph - it could seat up to 74 passengers, and had 40 berths in the upper deck. Both decks were carpeted. The lower deck had five compartments for men and women withtoilets, and hot and coldrunning water. The fourengines were capable of 1800hp each. After takeoff on thetransatlantic flight the passengers gathered in thelounges, played bridge or other games, had a few drinks (not supplied by Pan Am), then dinner was announced by the stewards. The meal was served on tables with white table cloths and silverware, and was found to be comparable to the best restaurants. The stewards made up the berths, and the passengers went to bed. In the morning the plane landed at Horta, 15 1/2 hours after take-off. While the plane was refueled the passengers were driven about the island. After reboarding, the flight continued 7 more hours to Lisbon. Here the passengers were taken to a former palace converted to a hotel, the Aziz. They were collected the next morning at 5:30a.m. for the trip to Marseilles. Breakfast was served en route at an altitude of 10,000 feet where it took 12 minutes for eggs to cook and coffee to boil. The stewards had to handle baggage, make up beds, serve meals, and handle passports. Their other problems aboard the flying boats included the load of dirty dishes withinsufficient water to wash them. On the return trip to the Azores, the dishes were unloaded in baskets to be washed at the objections of the customs officials.Only 12 Boeing flying boats were built, all exclusively for Pan Am, the first was nearly destroyed at Hong Kong but a Martin hadbeen sent instead. The Japanese attackedPearl Harbor and at the timethree flying boats were in theair over the Pacific, and adid not dare fly in daylight. Finally, the crew took off Monday night in radio silence. The Clipper reached San Francisco Tuesday witha crew who had not slept in72 hours.Early on December 7, the Philippine Clipper a Martin M-130. left the lagoon at Wake Island bound for Guam. The plane was loaded with tires for the Flying Tigers P-40 fighter planes in India, Burma, and China. When in the air 30minutes, a radio message informed the captain of the attack on Pearl Harbor and ordered the plane to return to Wake. When the plane arrived at Wake the radiooperator told the crew that Guam was under attack. The Clipper was quickly loaded with fuel in one hour, and was sitting low in the water loaded with high octane fuel when the Japanese planes arrived. Although no action was taken at the meeting, two possible options for dealing with the problem were presented by Newsom: periodic pumping and treatment, or moving the outflowacross Carney Lane to adjoining property owned bythe district. We re not currently at a point where the system is not functioning, Newsom said, but if the field fails, we will have an immediate healthconcern.Another topic discussed at the planning session was classroom space next year. Principal Gordon Franzen has asked for four additional classrooms plus conversion of some vocational space for industrial technology studies. Two ODtions nronosed bvNewsom were the lease-pur-chase of two temporary units, each housing two classrooms, or the lease-pur-chase of one temporary and the conversion of the present weight room into two classrooms. The second option would necessitate the construction of a simple metal building near the football stadium as a weightlifting facility, with a possible additional use as astorage area.Other short range problems such as transportation, playground upgrading, thelack of 3A facilities, roof repairs at Bowen and technological updating, as well as interest in exploration of split-schedule and multitrack year-round schooling were listed by Newsom on large sheets of paper andSee Wastewater, pageWimberley Chamber of Commerceake SaleOn Saturday , February 26, the Chamber of Commerce having a bake sale from 9:00a.m. until ??? at the CountBoys Grocery Store. There will be mountains of fresh homemadegoodies....Pies, cakes, muffins, cookies, brownies, candies, yeast breads, pastries, etc. etc. etc. Thanks for supporting vour local Chamberfourth was on the water. The one in the most danger was the Anzac Clipper which would reach Pearl Harbor inone hour as the Japanese planes were attacking there.
