Pioneers, from Page 7flying boat, the Sikorsky S-40, built as the world's first airliner. It was 76’ long and had 4 -575 hp. Hornet engines. With normal load its range was about 750 miles. These were the first Clippers; the first one was called the American Clipper. It held 50 passengers, and cruised at 115mph.. In 1931 the first S-40 took off from Miami with Lindberg flying. Later that year Lindbergh with his 25 year old wife scouted the first route to Asia by flying from Long Island. N.Y, via Canada. Alaska. Russia, and Japan to China. In 1934 S-4’s and Martin M-130’s were delivered with 150mph speed and a range of 1200 miles, but they still could not reach the 2500 mile California to Hawaii span. Yet a scouting party was sent by ship to check landing sites at Hawaii. Midway, Wake, and the Philippines. In 1935 construction crews were sent to these islands with aviation fuel, direction finding antennae, and all equipment to build two villages.Obviously a much longerrange aircraft was on the drawing boards, and the once impossible task of finding remote islands had been solved. Trippe's radio inventor had perfected the long range direction finder which he was certain would be able to pinpoint the small islands in the enormous ocean. Many in-flight tests proved the accuracy before the momentous first trip to Hawaii, with crew only. The second trip to Hawaii took 18 hours, landing at Pearl Harbor; then the next day the test flight was extended * to Midway.
