Gowell, Civil war veteran anti early pioneer of Michigan, family^story lhe deattl of Mrs- Gowell in September of last year, closes a chapter in an unusualMr. Gowell, drawn, to Michigan by the homestead privileges offered to veterans of the Civil war, was married here to Miss Julia Elizabeth Woodruff Sept. 1, 1869., ^ ^ Newaygo and Oceana counties until 27 years ago, when they came to Shcnilantownship, Mason county. Ali the experiences of felling the forests, following the blazed trails, help-ing to build the foundations and clear the pathways for coming generations were theirs. The perplexities and trials of life under primitive conditions were theirs in greater degree than with many,because of their large famity of 17 children.Fourteen of those children are still living, seven sons and seven daughters, 51 grandchildren 311 .®,re grandchildren, carrying on their traditions, following the pathways they made easy and benefiting by the heritage of honorable and patriotic citizenship handed down to them by these intrepid forebears.JjP4' 1929, Mr. and Mrs. Gowell celebrated their 60th wedding day and Mr. Gowell’s 83rd birthday at the home of a daughter in Ludineton, when over 75 of their children, grandchildren andgreat grandchildren and in-laws were present.j:
