Gaston l». t Pender, who is on duty on the west- U ern front in Holland. In it the officer » relates some of his experiences in j v the combat zone. He was formerly | stationed at Camp Sharpe, on the 1battlefield. lt;Since this letter was received a ' later communication has arrived j t disclosing that Lieutenant Pender now is in Germany and that he recently received the Bronze Star * medal. Mrs. Pender is a teacher at c the Lincoln school building here, jExcerpts from his letter follows:“I had a very unusual experience 1today m Germany. Sergeant Miller jt and I were lost up in the neighbor- ji hood of the Siegfried line ton the ( German side of it. toot and 1 knew’ jlt; I was close to the German infantry. 1 I ducked into a farm nouse and in- J side was a German Catholic priest Iand two German civilians. The priest ’ doffed his black hat and smiled very • friendly-like. I spoke to him in 1 English and he told me the way to H our lines in English. As 1 started to j get back into the jeep, he followed me out to the street. He tugged at ia my arm and with the most beseech-ing look in his eyes said, in a half-d- frightened tone. ‘Please Herr Officer, 42 I could you tell me de results of de election in de States today?'
