. NOTESTEIN IS MISSINGMedina Bomber Pilot ShotDown Over GermanyAnother Medina flier, Lt. Raymond Notestein has been reported missing in action the past week. Lt. Notestein was a bomber pilot and the telegram received last Monday night by Mrs. Notestein, the former Julia Baisch, stated that he had been missing since Jan. 29.Lt. Notestein, who was a nativeLt. Raymond Notesteinof Smithville, had lived in Medina for about a year before enlisting in the Army air forces in August,1942. He obtained his advance training at Ellington Field, Houston, Tex., where he was graduated and received his “wings”, April 29,1943. He was then sent to Kyote Air Base, Kyote, Tex., for#his postgraduate instructin'*. He went overseas last October and had been flying from an English base sincethat time.Was Hit Over GermanyMrs. Notestein received a letter from the chaplain of her husband'scompany, Wednesday evening, giving more of the details of the ill-fated mission. In his letter the chaplain stated that Lt. Notestein’s ship had been hit in the wing while on a mission over central Germany and that crews of other planes reported that he had maneuveredthe plane into a cloud bank, apparently to escape enemy fire, but that whether or not the crew was able to bail out was not determined.Lt. Notestein is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Notestein of Smithville and attended Wooster college.
