- 1 Dean Schultz is '‘Elsewhere.”Sergeant Dean Schultz who had beer stationed in Hawaii since going over [ seas* has been transferred to some I where in the Southwest Pacific, according to word received by his parentsI Mr. and Mrs. Levi Schultz at Luana to whom Dean writes under date oj January 13 and 19 as follows:“I don't have very much to write and haven’t had any mail as yet, scII don’t have any letters to answer News is going to be a very scarce item here and if I ever thought it was scarce before, I really didn’t even have anyn, I ideas about it then. The incoming r I news is also at a minimum as we have s no radios and no papers and none of us n have any idea of what is going on a outside. It is the first time I have ever been in a spot like this and it is s Quite a funny feeling alright. Perhaps v later on we will have electricity and e be able to use our radio, but right now -j the prospects don’t look very good.,f “It is quite a job running all of our a machines by hand now, and none of us realized just what it would be to q do without the good old electric cur-a rent. We have managed to get our December payroll completed and paid ^ I and so far I think we have done very , I well along the finance lines, j “This is a very hot, damp climate, I and the uniform here is a pair of shorts and a pair of shoes. It seems » funny to see everyone dressed that 3 way, but it is the only practical and 3 comfortable way to dress during theday.i “We have a fairly dry tent and so far haven’t had a% wet bed or had our , clothing soaked, 'but the way these clouds open up now and then you can ’ I never tell. I used to like camping out* but I can see already that this is going* to get old before it is over.“So far we have no fresh water for J washing clothes or bathing and that is really a problem. We have to wash in the ocean and you can imagine what 1 sort of a job you can do in that salt ‘ water. I never before realized there ? were so many small things in the every* day life that we just take for granted, but I am finding out about a lot of them down here. Everyone is working very hard though and one of theseI days we should have a fairly comfortable place to live.“The natives here are really of the story book or movie type and that is the only place I have ever seen any like them before. They are coal-black 1 and wear a loin-cloth for a garment and go barefooted all the time. You i should see these guys walk right up these coconut trees just like the movies showed them. I haven't heard any of them speak, but I don’t think they know any English, unless it would be some they picked up from the soldiers.“There are no towns on the island and absolutely no place to spend any money, except at the army post exchange and of course their supplies are very limited. This would really be the place for anyone to come if he was trying to save his money. Saving is a good idea, but I can’t say that I go for this plan of forced saving just because there isn't anything to buy. When we get back to the cities and the big stores we will really go wild buying things again.“Last night I attended the open-air theater and after about an hour fixing on the machine, we really had a very good show. No rain or anything to mar the pleasure. The picture was ’’Cabin in the Sky” and I liked it real well.“My candle is about burned down, and when that burns down, that is the end of the light around here.
