As a member of Company K of the 42nd Mississippi Regiment, he participated in Pickett’s charge on the last day of the great battle. Reaching the crest of Cemetery Ridge, Cole was wounded in the arm. By that time, the battle had turned against the Confederates, and Rebel troopswere fleeing for their lives.Running as fast as his legs would carryhim, Cole attempted to escape the enemy’sfire. When he was about halfway down thehill, he was struck in the eye. As he fell tohis knees, he felt blood cover his face. Helooked to heaven and cried, “Lord, I’m asinner. Please forgive me.”He then got up and struggled down thehill. Again he was struck by a minie ball,and the shock threw him to the ground.
