Cherry who found the four oranges that were ..the only food the men had with the exception of a few soa-birds and fish'.The sea was rough, but the men were able to tic the lifeboats together, and as the northeast wind blew them away, they could see the tail. of the plane bobbing in the ocean.“The radio operator had tuned the radio down to the correct kilocycles, and normally our message would have been picked up by any number of ships and islands. This time there wasn't a one.“We thought we’d be found on the second day and that it would all be a romantic adventure.“On the second day we had a feast. Wo cut one orange into eight parts. The third day it was the. same. And the fourth. And the fifth,” he said.The men had fish hooks, .but sharks like fish hooks, and finally there was just one left. Then there were none.“I lost account of the days after the third day, but one of the boys kept a log,” he explained.On the 13th day, one of the men, youngest of the group, died. While overboard early on the trip, he had drunk a considerable amount of sea water and that had made him ill.“We gave him a sea burial. One of the boys had a Bible and we said some prayers. By this time we could pray pretty good,” Capt. Cherry said.“One day we caught four fish about the size of a man’s hand and sliced them in sevenths. They were pretty good, too. Later on, we caught about 25 little fish about an inch and a half long. We didn’t get so hungry, though. You don’t after you get thirsty,” he added.The only method of storing water was in a life preserver, known among the men who wear them as “Mae West Vests.” Rainannounced for God to witness that j he had done all he could do. It wasn’t long till another cloud came , up from nowhere and blew them back - to the island and over the reef.“I think a man can go out on a life raft a fatalist or an atheist, but he won't come back that way. You get pretty near to God.”Capt. Cherry believes lie might have lived another week on the raft—unconscious, hut for not more than two days longer could he have remained conscious. - Already there were nightmares— what few minutes he could sleep.At the close of the banquet, it was announced that the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs arc buying Capt. Cherry n pair of cowboy boots—to take the place of those that went down with the Fortress, and a similar pair goes to Lieut. Moore in appreciation for his heroic service to his country.1. Maj.-Gcn.
