IIJaps Take Sarawak Capital, 475 Miles From SingaporeBritish Admit Fall of Kuching, Sought by Enemy to Harass English-American Communication With Butch East In-dies—Nipponese Advance South of Ipoh in Fighting in Malaya—Are Halted Along East Coast.Singapore, Dec. 29. — QP) — The British defenders of Singapore's approaches fought back strongly today against a Japanese penetration south of Ipoh, tin and communications center, in western Malaya, but the invaders' complementary drive along the east coast apparently made no progress.The fall of Kuching, the capital of British-protected Sarawak on the island of Borneo, where the Japanese seek a lodgement in such force as to threaten British-Ameri-can communication with the allied Dutch East Indies, meantime, was conceded. Kuching lies 475 miles due east of Singapore.Heavy Fighting Rages.As to the Malayan peninsula itself, the heaviest fighting was in progress in Perak state (presumably in the coastal areas above the Perak river) to the south of Ipoh, which itself is *90 miles north of Singapore and just at the edge of the harsh mountain, range which flanks the western coastal plain.Here, said the British headquarters communique, “our forces are in close contact with the enemy.”Elsewhere In Malaya, it was added, the situation was unchanged. Enemy air attacks on British east coast positions about'Kuantan were reported, but caused neither damage nor casualties.At the same time, the Royal air force was In heavy action against the Japanese operational bases to the north. Hard hit was the Japanese air base at Sungei Patani, up the west coast from Ipoh, where British bombs left fires and explosions.Seven Jap Planes Smashed.This was on Sunday night; a previous attack on Saturday night was shown by reconnaissance. to have smashed seven Japanese fighter planes and three heavy bombers and to have badly damaged five other enemy fighters.Headquarters' only reference to Medan in Dutch Sumatra was a report that enemy planes had raided the town, along with Port Swetten-ham in Malaya, and that only slight damage was done. In these forays, the invader lost one plane shot down and another damaged.
