MIDLAND BOY HAS TOE SHOT AWAY IN WAR[ ,__i1 Private Canty Writes ParentsHe Still Lives Although .Reported Dead.Private John Canty, non of Mr. and Airs. Michael Canty, Midland, who was * reported dead from disease by the . Private Canty has written his parents regarding his progress ; and the last letter received about ten ^ days ago said that he was looking for- j ward to an early return to this country \ and advised his folks not to write1* again if they did not hear from him. j ‘ He said he would be minus a toe, but! to save his English cut shoes because' j the lost member of his loot would not j, prevent him from wearing them. || Frequent cases have come to light within the past month which have shown that the War Department, in sending out telegrams announcing that , this boy and that boy had been miss- j ing in action, or had died of wounds1, or was killed in action, was not in 1 possession of the true facts and it is ! not unusual to find corrections made \ several weeks and sometimes months.' afterwards. The War Department, al- ] though it sent a telegram to the par- ' eats of Private Canty that lie had died:-oC disease and later followed that up . with another stating that lie had died ' from wounds, never corrected the mes*1 • sages. Had the parents not received letters from their son they would have been left with the understanding that he had died.Priavte Canty is a member of Company B, 313th Infantry. He left Mid- I j land with the draft contingent lastj June. ' After •spending six months in training at Camp -Meade he was detailed for overseas, duty with the 79th Division.
