Green Bay Soldier is Lucky WinnerSAIGON (AP — Christmas was a day of surprises for Spec. 4 Robert Decker of Green Bay, Wis. He thought he would share the stage with Bob Hope and his beautiful entourage but instead won $5,000 worth of free gifts.The 21-year-old Signal Corps-man was watching the comedian’s show at Long Binh when an officer asked for the identification cards of Decker and four others.“The officer said w'e’d get achance to go on stage with Hope,” said Decker, “but that didn't pan out. Then the officer came back and said one of thecards would be drawn from agift pack—you know, the usual soap boxes and tooth brushes they give soldiers at Christmas.”Decker’s card was drawn and he approached the stage expecting to receive a prize worth$9.“There I was, kind of nervous, and Bob Hope started talking about this new car. TV,clothes and a vacation in Vegas,” Decker said later. I thought all the stuff was forhim. When he said lake me with you to Vegas; I suddenly realized ‘Wow, that’s ail for me.The gift pack for the 500,000issued to a GI in Vietnam, and its suppliers decided to make it special.When he finishes his tour on Aug. 25, 1971, Decker willreceive a new car. a color television set, movie projector and screen, a S250 wardrobe certificate and a four-dav ex-penses-paid holiday for two in Las Vegas, Nev.“I thought this was going to be the worst Christmas I everhad and it turned out to be the best,” said Decker, who arrived in Vietnam four months ago and celebrated his birthday two weeks ago.
