December 26, 1950THEiOfficials Reveal Heroism Act Of Sgt. C. L RyanDetails have been received hereregarding the Bronze Star Medaland citation posthumously awarded Master Sgt. Clifford L. Ryan.husband of Mrs. Helen Ryan of Wilton, killed in action in KoreaNov. 1, 1950.Sgt. Ryan is the son of Deimar L. Ryan, 705 East Fifth street,Muscatine.Sgt. Ryan was posthumouslydecorated with the Bronze Star Medal for heroism displayed against the enemy near Tabudong, Korea.The citation accompanying the decoration accredits Sgt. Ryan with total disregard for his own safety in leaving the shelter of his tank and while exposed to intense enemy mortar, anti - tank and small arms fire coupling two tanks together and walking ahead of them to direct the two drivers. By his courageous determination to save a valuable tank from failing into enemy hands, Sgu Ryan enabled the tank to be towed tosafety.In full the citation reads: “Master Sergeant Clifford L.Ryan, armor. United States Arm--a member of Company B. 70thTank Battalion (Heavy), attached to 7st Cavalry Division, for heroism in action against the enemy on Sept. 3. 1950, i.car Tabudong, Korea.“While a tank in his platoon was engaging the enemy behind enemy lines it was struck by ananti-tank shell and became mired in the soft terrain. When it radioed for assistance, Sergeant Ryan moved his tank forward and placed it in a towing position. Then, with total disregard for his own safety, he left the shelter of his tank and, while exposed to intense enemy mortar, anti-tank and smail arms fire, coupled the two tanks together and walked ahead of them to direct the two drivers.“By his courageous determination to save a valuable tank from falling into enemy hands, Sergeant Ryan enabled the tank to be towed to safety.
