Their bellies were full of fascist promises and Benito's hot air.Remember those early days in Sicily? Remember the million kids hoUered ’^aramelU” and mangiari? At .the start you didn’t like those kids. They hut got In your hair—a lot of pests named Joe But that was months ago.Today those kids , are Butch. Jake and Shorty. They're Iniman beings who need shoes and a sandwich. They're youngsters who look up to us soldiers and sailors who talk a new language ~a language of democracy and freedom. They're the kids of Sicily, the Julians of tomorrow's new world who will think and act for themselves.Already, in the few months we've been here, these kios have undergone an amazing transition. You've probably got a red-hot inlieki working out with the gang, an infieki named Oluseppi, Salvatore and Vincensa. Sure, a short time back you got hot under the collar when you saw them clip an orange from the oomer stand. You tanned their hidtt* and tried to tell them Americans didn't approve of stealing. In a few weeks, if you were the right kind of a guy, you had those kids on the beam sampling athletics and a new deal. It wasn't hard to make them forget fascism and Mussolini Oult;*i*they had a taste of baseball, QI chow and the right kind of companion-ship, they wanted more.It* to those kids that we dedicate this Christmas. It's to tho.s*‘ dirty, bare4ooted caramelli youngsters who grew up under the rotten dark cloud of faacian that we drink a noble toast and deliver the future. From what*we*ve seen on the base bo 11 diamond and in everyday life Sicily’s kids are real men in the making if they have half a chance. Let* give it to them.
