under our present allotment system. , -Letter from Western Louiiiana.Correspondence of tho Daily Journal.New Irsria, La., Dec. 6, 1863.Editor Journal : You have doubtless heard before thiB of the eucceBses of the expedition eont from New Orleans' through Western Louisiana. Although we have had no engagements in which the whoie army participated at one time, yet skirmishes with dc» tachments have been numerous. The 13tli A.rmy Corps, composed entirely of Western fcroopn, have done the fighting, notwithstanding Iko reports published in Eastern papers; ^nd, to prove that these “penny a grab Yankee reporters have misstated the matter, I will give a little detail of the actions. The9ih corps, Eastern troops, hold the advance until within ten miles of Opelomas. They met with but little resistance until they crossed Carion Crow Bayou. Here they halted, and Cameron’s snd Burbridge’a brigades tcok the advance. These threo brigades wore camped three miles in advance of the army. The day before tho advance to Opelousas the 34th Indiana (Morton Rifles) and 23i Wisconsin skirmished with tho onomy nearly all day. The next day wo started just at daylight and by noon had routed tho onomy and entered tho town, Cameron’s brigade, composed of the 24th, 11th, 34th and 46th Indiana and 29th Wisconsin, were in advance, supported by Burbridge’s brigade.Tho next fight was when we had fallen back to Carrion Crow Bayou, and the brunt was borne by Burbridgo’a brigade, which lost 666 men. He was reinforced by McGinnis’s aivioion in the afternoon, and the enemy wore driven back with heavy los3. This division is composed of Cameron’s and Black’s brigades. Tho surprise and capture of tho rebel camp at Dake Tasseo, was done by Loo’s cavalry and Cameron’s brigade. Harper’s Weekly said that Franklin’s corps routed the snemv and captured OpolousaB. If they did, it was done iiko tho woman kept tavern in Illinois. I don’t doubt but they would havo done it as good as anybody, but ceeing they si i not, there is no U3e Baying they did. The 13th corps always want what is justly due them, and no more. It is the veteran corps of tho Vicksburg campaign, and does act care to havo its glory dimmed by eaBtern reporters. It never pays anybody to blow its horn.Tho intention of this exhibition, I suppose, was to draw tho rebel forces from the Rio Grande. It sports from Banks and Dana inform ub that tho cure has boon successful, end a good portion of Texas is now ours.Tho 34th Indiana is in good condition. There are but two or throe caseB of sickness in the regiment.More anon. Lieutenant.
