A negro named Jeremiah Gaines was drafted in Clinton county, Pennsylvania;hut failing to report, the provost maruhalof the county together with an assistant, ‘ went to'the house of the negro to secure bis artfest.. The deserter and his father fired upon them as they approached, kill* ing *h§£narehal and severely wounding hiscompanion.
