J“Ihe meeting was called by ‘common consent* and for no particular ^ purpose except to discuss things in ; general* including the result of the election in the United States and the armistice negotiations over at the front, and the satisfactory conditions of everything and everybody around the hospital.“In other words, it was just one of the many things that the ingeniousAmerican soldier is always doing tokeep life sunny and happy.“ihere were speeches about the elections, and speeches about the Kaiser and speeches about the hospital and speeches about the American Red Cross.Unfortunately there was no secretary at the meeting and no minutes were taken of the proceedings and thespeeches.“But a little while after the meeting one of the Red Cross women hap-1 lt;pen d to pass through ward *A* and |j as she went through, the chairman of the meeting, Sergeant Walter Sturgis, of Oakland, California, handed her a little note which has been ‘unanimously passed* for submission to the first 11 Red Cross worker that came along. “This was the note:“We, the boys of Ward ‘A’ appreciate fully the work done byyour wonderful organization in 'giving us a helping hand whenever needed.
