Mild measures with men [ who start fires or commit other acts to the injury of the country are a j menace to the national welfares the de- j fense council members declared.There is need in Iowa and in the | ocuntry of militant, aggressive patriot- j ism that will not tolerate treason in. any form or in any man, the patriotism \ that will gladly make sacrifices for our i country in the time of its great need, jTh* United States is fighting for its life, for its right to a free existence.German victory means subjugation for j every country at war with Germany. ■ Some of our people have been slow to ! realize this fact and have felt free to ; sympathize with Germany, a right1 which ceased to exist April 6, 1917. No, man can be loyal to this country who Is not whole heartedly. for the United States and her allies. There can be no divided patriotism. He that is not for his country is against it. Those who have been disloyal or lukewarm must recognize these facts and must have a change of heart or meet the punishment that traitors deserve.Treason Defined,To give aid and comfort to the enemy is treason, according to the constitution of the United States. This is a time for a searching of hearts and some who think they are loyal are acting in such manner as to win approval at Berlin. The time has come when such men must choose—must be either patriots or traitors, there is no middle ground.Loyal citizens should Join in making war on the disloyal to the end that they either be converted or stand stripped of false pretenses. There are men who are unconsciously disloyal because they fall to realize the German menace. These should be made to see the truth. There are others who are consciously disloyal. These should receive the treatment which reason deserves. If their language is disloyal they should be imprisoned. If their acts are disloyal they should be shot. Mild measures with men who start fires or commit other acts to the in-t Jury of the country are a menace to the national welfare.”The resolutions adopted urge the utmost vigilance in the detection and punishment and suppression of treason; an awakening to the dangers which confront the nation, the loyalty of church and school. The resolutions declared that the Red Cross and the Army Y. M. C. A. not only deserve but command the support of all loyal people and appeals for them should meet with the prompt and effective response. The resolutions further urged tne singing of America at every church service and that prayers should include appeals for the strength and guidance of the national administration and the tnnrnnh of our armies.1
