Board of Education recently au- They said that a square plan thorized construction of the of identical area to the circle city’s first “school-in-the-used in the Madison school hasround.” The 14-classroom elementary school is on Madison’swvest side and will be ready for occupancy in September. The design, which is a departure from traditional school planning, offers an opportunity for greater flexibility in instructional methods as well as increased efficiency in utilization of space, the board said. The plan of the Madison school has the classrooms distributed around the outside perimeter of a circle, with a ‘‘resource a re a” immediately available to all pupils at the center. This resource center includes a large free-form space for a library. There is also space for storage of reference materials and equipment, as well as tables and desks for pupil use. Also at the center of the plan are an art room, a sizable room with a stepped floor and a small stage for multiple use, a teachers’ workroom and administrative space. The gymnasium and locker rooms are housed in a separate circular area connected to the main building. Expansion of the facilities has been planned in a second classroom “satellite for future construction.Dr. Robert Gilberts, Madison superintendent of schools, said the design will permit individual and small group learning to take place to a greater extent than in a traditional school plan.According to the architects. Weiler, Strang, McMullin and Associates of Madison, the design is more efficient than aa perimeter which is lt;7 greater, while a rectangular plan of the usual proportions has a perimeter 185 feet greater than the circular plan.Because of reduction in corridor areas, the net educational space has been increased to almost 70 per cent of the total area, compared with the usual 60 per cent possible in a traditional design.Assessor Candidates Face Second TestTen candidates for deputy assessor will be tested again in mid-January, to select one whose name will be presented to the La Crosse Common Council to fill a vacancy in the city assessor’s office.Thirtv-three were tested Mon-day, and the top 10 were selected. The vacancy occurred when Charles Whaley was promoted from deputy assessor to chief assessor, to succeed Arthur G.
