Gentlemen: I was much surprised on going out of my t-jut this morning to find the rays of a bright December sun shining upon me, andthe ground overspread with a white mantle of snow. All nature seemed lovely beyond description. Indeed, we are favored with prolonged autumn weather, and the many thousand soldiers who are now living in their little cold tents are grateful therefor. There has oeen no preparations made for winter quarters for the First Indiana cavalry, and our horsesm/have to stand out in all kinds of weather, without any covering, which is very hard on them! of nights In the company to which i belong j I (the Crawford county com pan«) there are at prlt;. j 'sent only thirty-three hordes lit for duty, the ■ balance are down, mostly with cold and dis-j temper, caused bv standing out without cover, j Our regiment J us just been furnished with new j uniforms, clothing, and overcoats, all of good, warm material. The regiment has also just been paid oil’up to the iirst of November, and we are now all in high spirits with the prospectof a forward movement. We do not waut to winter heiv, bur, waul to p:;sh forward on Memphis,, and if we go into winter quarters at ;»li we want to quarter there. iut if it is theintention to keep vs here all winter to protect this point, I do rot see why we are not provided with comfortable quarters for ourselves findhorses, as it would be a great deal cheaper forthe government to build quarters and save our horses than to let them stand out in the snow and cold ail winter and have the most of them unfit for service next spring.
