Ashurst and Marcus A. Smith, at Washington and to United States Senators Albert B. Fall of New Mexico and William A. Smith of Michigan.Action by the senate that will automatically close ports on the Mexican border, whenever they become the scenes of battle, is asked. The messages were signed by O. W. Brandon, as chairman of a citizens’ meeting, called to devise some methods of obtaining protection from the Mexican bullets and shells.Colonel John F. Guilfoyle of the Ninth United States cavalry assumed command of the United States forces here, succeeding Colonel C. A. P. Hatfield. The telegram sent to United States Senator Ashurst reads:“Having appealed to Washington in vain for some relief, the citizens at Naco now come to you and ask you to help us. For two months Mexican factions have been fighting for possession of Naco, Sonora, wrhich has been strongly fortified by almost impregnable trenches surrounding thetown, with tiie international line as a base. Mexican facAions have deliberately used the border towns as a means of retreat without considering how many American lives were sacrificed, It made no difference to them as long as they could get munitions and supplies,“There is no safety in the streets day or night and very little in the houses. We suggest you introduce a bill providing for automatically closing Mexican border ports when they become the battleground for foreign factions, obtaining immediate passage if possible. Five have been killed and forty-two wounded and the end is not yet. For God’s sake, help us.”FA
