I^etler Importing His Wouiuls Comes to Brother Robert, and Seems to Hare Been sent by Nurse.Irvington, December 4—Wordcomes from a hospital in France under date of October 31 that Private John Gaffney, of this vicinity, was severely wounded in action by a high explosive shell sometime just prior to that date. This news was received by the wounded man’s brother, Robert Gaffney, of north of Irvington vicinity, in the form „of a letter, written presumably by the nurse attending the stricken 'soldier. At least, the letter was not written by the soldier personally. His wounds resulted, it is understood, from shell fragments, and the most serious are one in the right eye and another in the left hand. His condition is given as, “progressing as well as could be expected.” It is the writer’s understanding that John left America as a member of an artillery unit. He added great glofy to himself and his family by his enlistment early in the war,; His friends here expected to find him-where the fighting was thickest and most intense, and it begins to look as it lie had lived up to their expectations.
