r-a-iel1-Lack of HeatingieidleieHalts CD Planse-aitclfDecember 7 will have a dual significance across most of the nation this year — but not in Ed-wardsville, according to the city’s civil defense director, Leonard J, Schwartz.It will be declared “National Civil Defense Day” by President Eisenhower and through speeial proclamation named “Illinois.Civil Defense Day” by Governor Stratton.It also wilt be the 17th anniversary of Pearl Harbor.In Ed wardsville, however Schwartz said Tuesday, there is no public demonstration planned for that day,“We had planned a public inspection and demonstration at the civil defense communications center in the basembnt of the Leclaire Lake park bandstand, but had to call it off because we cannot get a utility gas-heating permit at this time,” Schwartz explained. “We are left without heating facilities until such time as some other heating arrangements can be made.Maj. Gen. Robert M. Woodward, state civil defense director, urged all Illinois communities to join in the observance which he termed:“A day to check our readiness to meet emergencies and to acknowledge the selfless devotion of government and civil defense workers in keeping our state more disaster-proof,” jtrjWith the slogan “Peace Through Preparedness,” the observance will emphasize the importance of everyone learning survival actions and incorporating civil defense preparedness in their daily lives, Government, civil defense and civic organizations will join in staging exhibits, demonstrations®, radio-TV broadcasts, parades and rallies, Girl Scouts will distribute wallet-size preparedness cards containing key survival hints to schoolchildren.Glt;boScenprthiyeMisa:
