Division closing but tanks and TDs strung back along the roads for miles. They are short bogies.19 Apr. - We are still attached to III Corps and looks like we will operate south of Bamberg. Major St. Clair had a “J Feder” go off in building about 100 yards from him. This is a beautiful country. Some Germans are happy, others are sullen. More women around and lots of babies. Our troops are behaving fine, no crimes or rapes except in isolated instances. The slave labor, except technicians, and POWs treated very poorly. The Russians have been treated worse than the Poles, then French, then British, and finally Americans. The Germans are fine when they are powerful but very meek and slimy when you overrun them. 17th SS Div. defending Numberg. Would like a chance to take another crack at that outfit.20 Apr. - Prepared to move to vicinity northwest of Numberg.21 Apr. - Moved to Langenzenn. 394 Inf. relieved one battalion of 42nd Inf. Div. Rainy and storm late in the afternoon. It is now cool and windy. Division moves to Schwabach, southwest of Numberg, tomorrow. We will attack southeast to cross the Danube River and push into Austria. Russians are reported in vicinity of Linz, Austria.22 Apr. - Remained in Schwabach waiting for 14th Armd. Div. to clear after crossing our front.23 Apr. - Division attacked southeast toward Danube River behind the 14th Armd. Div.24 Apr. - Division CP moved to Hilpol-stein and opened at 1900. Advanced 12,500 yards against no enemy resistance.25 Apr. - CP opened in Geddings at 1600. Our attack slowed down along the Altmuhl River. However, we have been ordered to attack throughout the night to reach the Danube River. XX Corps has its elements along that river and will attempt assault crossings tonight.26 Apr. - CP opened at 1900 in Sollem. Roads are dirty and dusty, choked with traffic. We are now planning crossing of the Danube
