For many years I have had the Book, “Memoir of Rev. Jesse Lee with excerpts from his Journal by Minton Thrift.” My book is in excellent condition so I can quote from it very accurately.Quote:Rev. Jesse Lee was born in Prince George County, Virginia, March 12, 1758 the second son of Nathanial and Elizabeth Lee, whose forefathers were among the earliest sellers to come from England after the first came to Jamestown. Jesse Lee’s fathar, Nathanial was born in 1730 and died on March 5, 1820 at the age of 90. Nathanial Lee left 12 ehil dren, 73 grandchildren and 60 great-grandchildren.” Nathanial Lee, father of Jesse had a plantation at Petersburg, and lived and died there. He was married 3 times, although Rev. Jesse Lee only names his mother and brothers, John and Nathaniel in his Journal. The three of them died before he did.Rev. Jesse Lee was an ordained Methodist Minister. From his youth he rode the circuit founding Methodist Churches all over the Continental United States, from Canada to Florida to the Western Boundry . Rev. Lee tells of visiting the cemeteries in Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown, looking for family plots.Rev. Jesse Lee was drafted into the Continental Army of the United States in July 29, 1780, discharged in 1782. He writes of serving as a minister. He was with Generals Washington, Butler and others. He writes of battles, encampments and places.Rev. Jesse Lee was elected Chaplain to the Continental Congress of the United States in Washington, D. O. on Sat., March 27, 1809, reelected in 1810 and so on until Dec. 1814 when he was elected chaplain to the Senate at Cumberland.He wrote of many places, people and events in Virginia and all other places. He bought a farm near his father’s plantation at Petersburg, Va., although he preached all his life and was in Hillsburgh, Maryland, when he died on Thursday, Sept. 12, 1816 from an accident injuries.I will greatly appreciate any Information your readers can give me about the ancestors or descendants of Nathanial Lee.
