FIGHTING MENAND WOMENIn a lengthy letter to his parents, S/Sgt. John Latson of Angle-ton, mi arid son lt;»f John t/mg of Hull, describes in detail his experiences as a squad lead* r in the paratroopers. He begins his ex-perienees by saying, “The day we left New York, we sailed out of the harbor in a snow storm. 1 did. however, see the grand old Lady before we sailed into the deep sea. It wasn’t until that mo.nient that f fully realized what I was leaving, and perhaps would never see it again ” Later, Sergeant Latson tells of landing in Ireland, of the beauty of that country. and of the trip to Nottingham,England. And in detail, he describes tin* jump at Normandy on I) Day. and later the jump in coordination with the British in Holland. Then, '’After Holland came tin* battle of tin* Bulge and Rhineland. The bulge was our worst, as far as weather and fighting was concerned. In the bulge I was the only man left out of my squad. They did away with about thre* squads for me there.” The Sergeant concludes a most interesting letter by saying. “And now.1Mother. I have told a small part of my life over here, and 1 11 end by saying that I’ll he glad to starta new' one over there.”Pfe. Robert Dalton Abel is spending a 30-day furlough with hiswife and son at Iw vers, and his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Abel, and sister, Mrs. W. O. Gibson,Jr., in Liberty. Private Abel arrived home on the Queen Mary, August 2. after serving with the 90th Infantry Division in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. After being hospitalizedwith trench foot, he was assigned to an engineer regiment in France. He wejfrs the KTO ribbon with two battle stars, the good conductribbon, and the combat infantryman’s badge. His engine* ring unit has been awarded a citation. Private Abel reports to Fort Sam Houston for re-assignment at the end of his furlough, lie* has two brothers, now station* d in France.i
