Considerable excitement and damage attended the blaze, for one engineft N'Was nearly wrecked, on its way to the scene, £he driver hurt and other firemen injured in an attempt to save three horses, -which per-iished. Miller is inclined to believe that thefire was of incendiary origin and the police,. * ►of the Clymer street station arc working on his theory.. For some time the butcher hadbeen bothered by young men in the neighborhood who^ chose a spot near his stable as a place for crapsn£' dtlier small gambling games. : He frequehtly 'complained of them and -they-.declared- he would feel sorry for Informing-the police-The stable, which was of brick, was at Division avenue and ^Keap stret, and it con* tained-three' horses, valued at $800, and two wagons, which the butcher had purchased last Saturday.. The fire was discovered shortly •after .5 o^Qlock and. the entire building was enveloped In flames. before the first engine company arrived. The members of Engine No. 3 broke into the stable In an attempt toreach the three horses, but the flames drove them back. All the firemen, were either burned or overcome by the heat, but none was seriously hurt except Morrison, who was burned about the hands and face and required the attention of q doctor.While Chemical Engine No. 1 was speeding through Soutii Fourth street, near Have* meyer.'it collided with Truck No. 54 and was overturned. • Edward McCue was r thrown from his seat to the pavement and was severely cut and bruised about the body and head. He was unconscious when picked up and was removed tq the Eastern District Hospital, where his condition was pronounced serious.The flames spread so rapidly and sent up such showers of sparks that tenants in the tenements on Broadway became alarmed and' ‘ a small panic ensued. In their anxiety to get out of the houses men and women fell down stairs', but there were no serious mishaps.The stable was completely destroyed and Miller sustained a severe loss, as bis horses, wagons and other material stored in the place were consumed. .A few weeks ago the insurance which .Miller had carried for fifteen years' lapsed and. he did not renew it.f . . .
