Work Assuming Large ProportionsNorwichLocaldred Dollars for Wool.The work being done Dy the women of Norwich under the auspices of the National league for Woman’s Service, in the line of the navy knitting- is assuming large proportions.Already the local branch has expended nearly five hundred dollars for wool, a large number of pounds of fwhiC/i is given out weekly. The work is of the utmost importance and a gratifying interest and zeal is displayed by the Norwich women. Twenty-one sets have been sent to the Navy league headquarters, to be distributed and twenty additional sets have been sent to the submarine base at the Navy Yard. Bight sets have been furnished to the United States shipLenta and more are to be provided on receipt of application. This is of especial Interest to Norwich, since it is on this ship, formerly a yacht, now converted into a ship in the government service, that one of our Norwich young men, Prentice Chase, is stationed.The chairman of the local branch of the league had opportunity recently, to talk with another Norwich boywho has been to France and back and expects the call to again face duty there and was very much interested to hear what he had to say of these knitted sets. He said that thecomfort .they provided for the sailors could not be expressed The cold felt on the ocean after land has disappeared is bitterly intense and anything to alleviate it is eagerly sought for. It is almost unbearable and the* sweaters, scarfs and wristlets, while light and not bulky, are a great boon to these boys saijing in our service.The sympathy of the chairman was so roused that a set was immediately pressed on the young sailor, who bore it triumphantly forth.We cannot all realize, perhaps, while we are so comfortable at home, the lack of comforts many of our boys are enduring and the great need for all our most strenuous and loving service.General Pershing has sent forth a call for 2,500,000 of these knitted sets and in the very near future the army knitting will be added to the navy’ knitting in the Norwich work!
