Crowds GatherFor Parade ToMarkDayCheers Greet Marchers os City Continues CelebrotionWar—Fireworks at FairgroundsFollow ProcessionA_ spectacular parade composed of thousands of marchers witnessed by countless thousands of spectators filed through the streets of Hagerstown last night, just 25 hours after peace returned to the world.Civilians and the military, organized bodies and individuals, fraternal and business organizations, mingled to form one of the most colorful processions seen here in manyyears.parade, marching east from the corner of WestWashington and South Potomac streets, passed a reviewingstand in Public Square in which patients at Newton D. BakerHospital were seated, beneath a big neon-lighted “God BlessAmerica” sign. _ From the Square, dhe parade moved to theFairgrounds, where a spectacular parade of firew'orks waswitnessed by marchers and spectators to conclude the gala occasion. 'The Alsatia Club, famous for its sponsorship of the pre-war Hallowe’en Mummers Parade, acted as marshals, and kept the long line of march compact and moving at an exceptionally fast pace. Its length was such, however, that it required 40 minutes to pass a given point.The parade was led by Hagerstown and Maryland State police, veterans of the first and second World Wars representing all branches of the service, and the Mayor-.and-Council.The jostling but orderly and good-humored crowd of spectators that lined the streets cheered every marcher and vehicle in the parade, but reserved their loudest acclaim for a large group of soldiers from a nearby Army camp, and the mechanized equipment which they brought along. Also in line was a good-sized detachment of Wacs. ’A half-dozen l)ands and drumcorps, scattered throughout the line of march, provided music. Non-musical noise was capably furnished by the sirens of fire trucks fromHagerstow-n, Boonsboro, Sharps-burg, Greencastle, Funkstowm, and Williamsport, as well as steam whistles on a big Bester-Long truck.Marching bodies included representatives of virtually all the fraternal bodies of this city and their auxiliaries. Volunteer groups who marched included Red Cross workers and their various branches, Cadet Nurse Corp members. Minute Men, air raid w'ardens, volunteer aircraft spotters, Civilian Air Patrol, Salvation Army, Army Mothers, and others.Patriotic organizations made upan important part of the line of march.
