Negro Sailor Of ' Denton Killed In Jap Suicide AttackCarl 1». Jones, Negro sailor, son of Jim and Carrie Jones, 914 Timber, was killed in action May 28. when his ship, the destroyer, USS Drexler, was sunk in a vicious 90-second attack by three Japanese suicide bombers off Okinawa.Casualties on the ship totaled 210. including 158 dead and 52 wounded.The wartime complement of theDrexler was approximately 350 officers and men.Jones entered the service in 1943 and was a steward’s mate first class i at the time of his death. He had served in Hawaii and the Panama Canal Zone.
