NAVY MOVES 10 STRENGTHEN IIS GARRISON AI CUBA BASEWASHINGTON Aug 9—.P-The navy moved today to strengthen the garrison of its station atGuatanamo bav Cuba, an important base for warships guarding the eastern approaches to the Panama canalIn a formal statement the department announced that the 2.900 officers and men of the first marine brigade would be moved to Guatanamo from Quant ico, Va.,during September,The nnouncement said the shift was for the purpose of preliminary training of this force in view of extensive maneuvers planned during the winter in the Carib-Press officers said M r maneuvers would be carried out bv the marines and that they would in-olve landings and other operations. Similar maneuvers are conducted each year, they said.The naval station at Guantanamo has been selected for preliminary training, the announcement said because the terrain and other facilities essential for the training were available there.
