King’s age, nearing the 110 year mark, is only an approximation, there being no records kept at that time.Army Service record show that Jeff Kmg served with the United States army, in the Cavalry, for 'over twenty years. Today King still receives a small pension from the Government, for those years of service. During his tenure serving the Army, Jeff was a scvut, mostly with the Cavalry, and served mainly in the Fort Wingate area. During this service Ki.ig was wounded several times. In addition to serving regionally, Jeff also made several longer scouting expeditions with the Cavalry. One of the most outstanding recollections in the old man s memory concerns one of these trips. This journey lasted morethan nine months. The troops, with Jeff acompany-ing them, left Fort Wingate south into Old Mexico. From Mexico the troops turned to the West into the California Territory, North, up the Pacific coast line, before turning back East toward home and Fort Wingate. This trip, over 2,000 miles, was made afoot and on horseback, through some of the worst desert and mountainous regions of the Southwest and farWest.King has served with some ofthe most famous military names in America’s history. General John J. (Black Jack) Pershing, and General of the Army Douglas Mac Arthur. Both of these outstanding men of fame were tioned at Fort Wingate, at time during their militaryecrs.Recently King, accompanied byLaird Savage, Executive Managerof the Fort Wingate Centennial^ Commission and Ernest Yazzie, King’s nephew and officially appointed interpretor, made an extended tour of New York, West Point and Washington D.C. This trip, made under Government auspices, was to honor the old scout and also to help publicize the coming Fort Wingate Centennial, in late August, of this year-King was taken on a tour of Old Fort Jay, the Statue of Liberty and many other points of interest in the New York area, including the United Nations. Jeff then went to West Point, New York, where he was taken on tours and feted by both the Commandant and Corps of Cadets of the United Staftes Military Academy.During these tours Jeff was interviewed by a multitude of thevarious news media in the area,as well as appearing on the TodayTV show.Jeff and the party then embarked for the Pentagon where theold man’s charm and appearance captivated everyone with whom hecame in contact. At the Pentagon King was pre-. sented with the Indian Campaign Medal by Lieutenant General J. H Hinrichs, Chief of Ordnance of' the United States Army. This was a belated decoration presented to Jeff on behalf of his services with the Cavalry during the1880'S.King is fV only Indian overunprf? a member of State Govero-Staff. Jeff was cotnmis-oa the StaU ofNew Mexico’s Governor, John Burroughs.King, Savage and Yazzie have just returned from a grand tour of the West coast in the interest of the Fort Wingate Centennial.
