Man shot in attempt on drug agentA 2l-year-old Alton man was«hottwice Wednesday night by an agent ofthe Metropolitan Enforcement Groupof Southwest Illinois after the agent wasrobbed at Hampton and Harrison streets.Rich Woods, MEGSI director, said today Kehneth D. Matlock of 1125 Union St., was shot once in the chest and once in a shoulder during the skirmish between Matlock, a companion andan unidentified MEGSI agent.The police agency director said events leading to the shooting started when the plainclothes agent was “working” the Highland Avenue area of Alton in an attempt to locate drug traffic.Woods said the agent had made contact with Matlock and another man, who promised to take the agent to a spot where he could make a “buy.”They all got in the agent's car, according to Woods, and later, when the agent refused the “buy,” the two men robbed him of $130.Woods said Matlock brandished a gun and when he turned away from the agent momentarily the agent retrievedhis own gun on the car floor and fired twice.Meanwhile the second man fled with the agent’s $130.Matlock was admitted to St. Joseph Hospital, where he was reported in “fair” condition today.Woods secured a warrant from the Madison County states Attorney’s office charging Matlock with armed robbery. Bond of $50,000 was set by Circuit Judge Horace L. Calvo.
