What Happened In Petersburg1782ttBy BICHARD L. JONESThe military campaigns of the Ar rican Revolution ended atVorktown, Virginia, in October, 1781. The peace treaty dragged on until 1703.By October, 1784, Petersburg became an Incorporated town, with its own court of record, comprising the colonial tobacco towns of Old Petersburg Town New Town (High Street), Ravens-’ craft, Blandford and Pochontas, Between these towns, the intervening lands were owned by Robert Bolling III (died 1778), Peter Jones V (died 1779), Lewis Parham, Halcott Pride and John Bannister.Socially and entertainment-wise, the local color TV attraction was horse racing, withtracks in Blandford (New Market), Ravenseraft and PridesRaceway (north of West Washington Street). For food and drink, the stage stopped at Spencers adjoining the Pocohontas Bridge, Bromley at the head of Browders Bridge on Old Stteet, the Golden Bali Tavern on Short Market Street, Prides Tavern on West Washington Street, the Long Ordinary on Cox (Cocke) Road, or the Globe Tavern on Halifax Road (road to Monk’s Neck). The existing town lots ranged from one - half acre in Old Town to one acre in New Town and three acres in Ravenseraft.Scottish merchants and fac-ters remained mostly in Blandford, with Pocohontas becominga home for a relatively newclass called “free men of color.”bers increased by gradual emancipation under pressure of religious reformation urged by a new freedom to preach which the American Revolution guaranteed to the Methodist and Baptist preachers. With the “free men of color” to provide the muscle, the returning soldiers’ desire to promote private enterprise, and by investment of private capital to manufacture cloth and tobacco, the canals and factories were built and the Appomattox River water prower was harnessed.Today In HistoryBy The Associated Press Today is Sunday, Aug. r1971, the 213th day of 1971.There are 152 days left in the year.Today’s highlight in history: On this date in 1907, what is now the Air Force was established as the aeronautical division in the office of the Army.It consisted of one officer and two enlisted men.On this date:In 1502, Christopher Columbus landed on what is now Honduras,In 1790, the first U.S. census was taken.^ In 1794, the Whiskey Rebellion in Pennsylvania broke out. Germany declared war on Russia at the outbreak of World War I.With few exceptions, most of the 1 o t s in the five towns of Petersburg were intact in 1782. Within the next two decades, they were so splintered that hardly a single whole lot remainedin private ownership. To thesewere added hundreds of lots, until by i860, Petersburg contained 9,000 residents equal in size to Atlanta, Georgia, and second to Richmond. The railroads did not arrive until almost 1840, so we must look elsewhere to see what happened. The American Revolution abolished the patroon or indentured servant concept of paying for overseas passage. Wealthy slave owners found it much more profitable to export newborn slaves to the gulf states. Who, then, was left to build the canals and factories over the next six decades? What became of the Appomattox Indians who had been declared slaves by act of the general assembly as early as 1670?A merger of the Indians with emancipated slaves brought about a new work force which became known as “free men of color.” They began acquiring property first in Pocohontas and later in Ravenseraft. Their num-New factories meant new jobs. Those who sought employment in the mills needed homes, fire protection, water and all the requirements of an urban socic-ty. The end result in Petersburg was rapid growth..
