For many years the wreck of the Sultana ; had the lead in loss of life over any other 'ike disaster the world has ever known.The Sultana was a Mississippi river steamship, one of the largest thatstream ever saw. She pulled awav| from the wharf at Vicksburg on the evening of April 25, starting north I with hundreds of soldiers returning from servic? in the south or from southern war prisons. The great boat had reached a point about eleven mile3 above Memphis on the evening of April 27, when her boilers exploded, (Shattering the structure from stem to stern and setting it afire. There were I 2,175 persons on the boat. Of these, more than 1,500 lost their lives, either burning to death or drowning. Scores | of men were killed in their sleep by . the explosion.
