A. D. Hopkins’ Condition.Friends and acquaintances of A. D. Hopkins are grieved to learn of hii(*• 4mental state. For some years hii mind has been failing and the last two or three years he has been unquestionably insane. Ec/th his mother• •and brother died of brain disorders.Last month his son-in-law, M. Overholt, of Lester, Wash., made all plans to take him into hris home and then came here to arrange matters.Mr. Hopkins was like a child, eager to go to his daughter, and impatient of any delay. But after starting he wanted to take his own time about boarding trains, etc., several times standing in front of moving cars until forcibly removed. His actions on - the Pullman excited the passengers, and between Oakland and Sacramento they demanded his removal from the train, as . he was disturbing the mid: night by vehemently insisting on - walking off the train to feed his •\.*chicken3. As he resisted' all efforts ■to keep him from stepping off the train, saying he would kill those who prevented him, he was taken into ■ custody. ,It is a great disappointment to the daughter who had hoped to cheer her ; father’s last years in her own comfortable home. He is over eighty-five and in.no condition to either care for himself or be allowed to go whereverhis wild fancy may dictate.
