6lPr-THE GASTONIA GAZETTE, SuShrine 100scheduled for May 20{Special to The Gazette)Mike Duvall Is building a strong case as one of the leading late*model sportsman division stuck car drivers in the Carolinas.And that's covering a lot of talent.The 27-year-old moustachioed Duvall competes at his hnmetown Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, S.C., as if he owns it and when he’s not busy picking off Promoter Edgar Gault's top money at Cherokee he's flashing winning credentials at Gas Ionia Speedway, home of Ihe Shrine 100.Duvall lias won the last two Gaston County Shrine Club-sponsored races and will be trying to run that mark to three in the fifth annual race coining up May 20.Last spring, Mike, in a Camaro, became the first two-time winner since the Shrmers switched from NCAA collegiate baseball to stock car racing to raise money for their number 3ne project, the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Greenville, S.C.In promotion of the District $ NCAA baseball tournament and races since 195ft, the Gaston County Shritiers haveraised well over $100,000 for theGreenville Unit,“We've set up our various commit t e es, s ays gen era I cha irma n John Stanley, and the next several weeks we'll be busy as bees preparing for wiial we feel will be another outstanding race for iin outstanding cause.MStanley says efforts are being made to get at least two of the top-notch names from the superspeedway racing ranks to appear at the track the night of ihe race.The fact that the fifth annual Shrine ICO is the forerunner to the big World 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway could be a big boost to the May 20100-lapper at Gaston Speed way.One thing's for sure, says Stanley, “it won't hurt. Really, I think it'll help.All former champions of the Shrine 100 will be in the field for the fifthannual running, including the inaugural winner, Rillv Scott of Union, S.C. Stick Elliott of Shelby took Ihe checkered flag in 194? and Duvall has won for the past two seasons.As for his chances for a third straight, Ltiu Canwo-driving Duvall says: •'Good as anybody’s, I suppose.JVs getting tougher and tougher, but the car’s been running good and we'll l)c competitive, real competitive.”Duvall has won four races at Cherokee Speed wav so far this season, getting that fourth after an tin usual xumterup finish for two straight weeks there.The sponsoring Gaston County Shrine Club is expecting to fnrk over a record track purse of some $1,300 to the winning driver in the late May event at Gaston Speedway.“We're working on it, says Stanley, and just like the drivers themselves, anybody promoting a race has to slay competitive. Most of the tracks operating in the Carolinas offer lucrative cash prizes and, in order to get the best short-track talent available, we’ve got La stay competitive.
