Lloyd David Gunnels, 24, of Kirbyville, Tex., when ho was attacked in an isolated position while serving- as an advance sniper. When attacked, Gunnel hesitated between remaining in his foxhole and returning to his unit, but decided to stay rather than expose his outfit’s position. Finally, though, one Jap bullet struck Gunnel and pierced his right eye. He is pictured above in Oak Knoll Naval hospital, Oakland, Cal., where he is recovering from his wound. Official U.
