isoci-INTERMENT OF LOCAL HERO’'“iBody of Leonard Burke Who Was Killed In Action, Arrivesastic 1 indin icnceFrom France; Comrades And Citizens Pay Homage.IS FIRST FULL MILITARY BURIAL SEEN IN JASPERThe stirring scenes of war times were vividly recalled Friday night when a company of soldiers, preceded by the American Legion rifle squad and a brass band marched to the Southern depot to meet the body of I-eonard Burke, one of the Jasper boys who gave their life on the battlefields of France.Crowds of citizens assembled at the station and reverently bowed their heads when the body was carried from the station platform to the hearse between two rows of soldiers standing at attention, to the tune of the Star Spangled Banner.The large funeral procession then moved towards the home of the war hero’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Burke, on East Seventh street, where the body lay in state until Sunday morning. The members of the Legion posted armed guards over the body until it was removed from the house Sunday morning.The funeral procession formed in front of the residence at 7 o'clock, headed by the volunteer band directed by Edward Jerger. Then followed the colors and color guards, the rifle squad and^ officers, immediately preceding the hearse. The pall bearers marched on either side of the side of the hearse.Undoubted the largest turn-out of men in uniform since the Home-Coming celebration followed the remains of the heroic comrade and a host of citizens completed the cortege.After a solemn requiem in St. Joseph’s church, during which the soldiers stood at attention, the procession formed again and marched to the lust resting place. In Fairview cemetery amid a large assembly of relatives, friends and comrades, thesolemn rites of the church were I said, and the body of the fallen; hero was laid to rest in his native j soil, the soil in defense of which he; gave his life.After the religious services, the American Legion paid its respects to the deceased comrade. A. T. Rumbach read the obituary prayer after which tjiree volleys were fired by the rifle squad, and Ups. the soldier’s call to rest, was sounded by Bugler Jos. Hotfman.Beautiful floral pieces were offered by various organizations of this city.Leonard Burke was a member of Co. F. 120 Infantry, 30th (Old Hickory) Division. He left Jasper on Sept. 19th, 1918 with a detachment for Camp Taylor where he was put In Co. G. 335 Inf. 84th Division. From that outfit he was transferred to 30th at Camp Sevier. He sailed for overseas on May 12, 1918, landing at Liverpool, England on May 27. The division soon moved to the front, took part in the Ypres campaign and in the Somme offensive. It was during the latter engagement, on Oct. 8, 1918 that Leonard Burke fell, a piece of shrapnel struck the upper part of his head, killing him instantly.In the same shell hole where Burke had taken refuge, was Theo. Mercker of Ireland. Ed Helming and Wm. Mehringer were in the sj»me engagement. Robert Fritch and Frank Schuetter members of the same regiment were wounded shortly before. Several other local boys were in the divison, and took active part in the funeril ceremonies for their comrade.Leonard leaves his parents, Mr. ami Mrs. Jos.
