The Mon-tieello drum corps, with Win. Van Pelt, the veteran fifer of the Civil war, leading, was given the post of honor in the parade which was led by Kenneth Bowman, dressed as Uncle Sain, and Miss Chamberlain,who impersonated Miss Columbia. They were mounted on beautiful horses and led a group of four hundred school children, the citizens following the lead of the schools. The Chalmers band also had a place in the procession.Addresses were made at the handstand by I’rof. Frier, of Purdue university, A. K. Sills, jr., and A. B. Cray, of this cilv, Mr. Sills paid a tribute to the flag, Capl. Cray appealed to the patriotism of the young men in this hour when the nation is calling for defenders, and Prof. Frier emphasized the importance of increased food production as a duty we owe to the country.Eight Civil war veterans, one veteran of the Spanish-American war and a member of the regular army occupied scats on the stand. The flag,a large banner 9x18 feet, purchasedby the citizens of Chalmers, was raised to the top of the pole by four Civil war veterans, and as it ascended the band played the “Star Spangled Banner.” The flag salute was given by the assembled crowd and the exercises closed by all joining in the singing of the national anthem.
