Rumors were rife in Fairbanks Saturday and Sunday that the Alaska Freight Lines “monster,” the huge LeTour-neau land train, broke through the ice of the Coleen river and became stranded. We have endeavored to trace downsaid rumors, but it is difficult since the project is such a“hush hush” undertaking. The best information we can get indicates that the rtfmors were false. The big land train is pushing its way northward. It is in the vicinity of Old Crow flats at present. It reportedly has cleared all the rivers. We do hear that the rig has experienced trouble with drive shafts which break at monotonous intervals. The Le-Tourneau factory is now making some shafts that are extra thick, and designed to stand up under rugged Arctic conditions. Until these new shafts reach Alaska, the men operating the monster will have to continue changing the old shafts like diapers.mBut, we hear the “monster” is still going strong, and making good time over trackless Arctic tundra with some 110 tons of freight.■
