Of tlie Thirtieth Indiana Infantry.The Thirtieth Regiment was organized at Fort Wayne, and mustered into service on the 24th of September, 2361, with Sion S. Bass as Colonel. Moving to Indianapolis, it proceeded thenc e to Camp Nevin, Kentucky, reporting to Gen. Rousseau on the 9th of October.Joining the brigade of Gen. McCook, soon after, it moved with Buell’s army to Munfordsville and Bowling Green, and in March, 1862, marched to Nash-ville. From this point it moved to the battle held of Shiloh, and participated in the engagement there on the Gh of April. The Regiment lost its commanding officer, Colonel Bass, who fell severely wounded, and died at I’adu-cah, in a few days afterward. I ,ieut. Col. Joseph B. Dodge, succeeded Col. Bass as Col. Besides the loss c f its Colonel, the Regiment suffered severely in killed and wounded, losing 125Marching with the army to Co -inth, it participated in the siege of that place, and then moved with Buell's command through Northern Alabama and Tennessee to Kentucky. In the fall of 1862, it engaged in the pursuit of Bragg beyond Crab Orchard, Kentucky, and then moved to Nashville, where it rested until the forward movement of Rosecrans’s army commenced.Proceeding with that army lo the vicinity of Murfreesboro, it tool part in the three days battle at Stone River, on the last day of 1862 and the two first days of 1863, losing 136 me i. Inthe campaign that followed the Reg* ment was actively engaged, and after the occupation of Chattanooga, marched out with the army and partic ipated in the battle of Chiekamauga, Snpt. 19 and 30, 1863. It led in a charge hereand suffered great loss from a rebel battery; and at night received a charge In front and flank in which tin regiment lost 208 men out of 410 present for duty. After this battle it moved to Whiteside and Tyner’s Station, Tennessee, where a small portion of the Regiment re-enlisted in December. Marching to Blue Springs, Tennessee, these were re-mustered as veteians in January, 1864, and soon after proceeded to Indiana on veteran furlough. The regiment remained at Blue Springs until April, and then moved forward with Thomas’s army in the campaign against Atlanta, participating in all the battles and skirmishes that transpired up to the occupation of that city. After the muster out of the non-veterans, while the regiment was at J Alanta, the veterans and recruits were consolidated into a Residuary Battalion of seven companies, on the 3rd of December, 1864, by order of Gen. Thomos J. Wood. The Battalion was the:l placed in command of Lieut. Col. Henry W, Lawton, and moved northward with the 4th Corps to Nashville, and there participated in the battle fought against Hood’s forces on the 15 of December. Subsequently it moved in the pursuit of the enemy to Huntsville, Alabama, and then proceeded with the 4th Corps into East Tennessee. Returning to Nashville, the B attalion remained there until June, 1865, when it was transferred to Texas with the4th Corps, under General Sheridan.*The Battalion was mustered out at Victoria, Nov. 25,1865, and the boys were soon on their way home.The 30th served four years and two months.Total number of men mus tered in and assigned to the regiment from start to finish, 1980.Miles marched, 2860; not including the trip to Texas and return.
