Sylvia Bertrand gained court approval Iot the charge to be amended to include joint conspiracy virS self-confessed American mercenary .tiler, Michael Perdue and gang member. Wolfganf Droege to carry out an armed overthrow of the government.Perdue. Droege, and aeTen others have been convicted of planning the invasion attempt and were sentenced in a New Orleans court in the U.S.A. to three vein in jail each. They were arrested near New Orleans on April 27 on their way to a veael that was to take them to Dominica.The U.S. court heard evidence that the men were planning to restore John to power.The formal charge read out by Miss Bertrand in a Dominica City Magistrates Court today accused the ex-Prime Minister and the eight others of traito-riously conspiring together with Michael Perdue and Wolfganf Droege and withErraons unknown inside and outside the oramonweaUh of Domipica to traito-riously overthrow the lawfully constituted govcrment by force of arms con-tary to law.None of the accused men who appeared in court today challenged the . amendment by the Director of Prosecution. some not even wailing to hear the entire amendment read out to them.The. nine arc also charged with con spiring together and with a group of persons commonly known as dreads (ras tas) and other persons unknow. to use violence with intent to subvert the gov ernment of Dominica.The prosecution asked the magis trate to nave the preliminary inquiry into the charges to be postponed untd September 17. The request was approved.'Mm Bertrand told the court that the extra week would be necessary jo order that “quite a few ' witnessei experte^ from overseas could attend.She said that there was also another matter before the* court one day before the preliminary inquiry’ should have started.
