Carib teachers seek to• i K. *replace G.C.E. exams■ GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Aug.28 (Reuters): The Caribbean Union of Teachers is to call on Governments in the regibn to take 6teps to replace the General Certificate of Education (G.C.E.) examinations with a suitable examination designed to meet the needs of Commonwealth Caribbean territories.The C.U.T, at its recent biennial conference in Antigua, felt it was vital to the whole process of Caribbean integration tohave a change in the educational system, so as to bring an end to the present G’C.E. examinations.With to recent years, and with tbe constitutional developments throughout the Caribbean, Governments have been expressing desire for a change in the examinations system, and to foowi attention on the teaching Of English in the region.But the C.U-T. President, Guyanese Basil Blair, thinks the time is ripe for positive efforts in this direction, particularly in the methods of teaching English^ bearing in mind the high percentage of failures in this subject over recent years.Mr. Blair said the C.U.T. also opreed to set up a five-man committee to study the growing problem of the brain drain” from the Caribbean to North America and Europe.The committee will consider how best the Government* of the region could help in ensuring that those trained at tho taxpayers* expense, return to the Caribbean to serve.The limited facilities opened to teachers of the region will olso be considered by the committee.Meanwhile in Georgetown, Education Minister, Mrs; ’Winifred Gaskin, irf tomorrow opening e headmasters and managers conference to deal with Govtrnment's introduction of the multilateral schools syc-
