Hearings into attempted coup open in DominicaROSEAU. Dominica, Aug. IS (CANA):THE FIRST series of preliminary court hearings linked to an attonpt by mercenaries Co invade Dominica la* April, started on Roseau today, with ■even vfitma testifying.Before the court wu 27-yrar-old Irish Canadian visitor, Marian McGuire, who is charged with conspiring with others co topple the Dominica government by force of arms.The woman is among 10 people detained here in connection with the plot. Included are former Dominica Prime Minister, Patrick John and the two top officials of the disbanded Dominica Defence Force. Commander Major Frederick Newton and his second in command, Captain Malcolm Reid.Member* of the mercenary group, headed by Texan Michael Eugene Perdue have already been jailed by a Federal court in the United States, for their pan m the plot. They had been intercepted by Federal Bureau of Iiurestigation (FBI) agents when on the flfint of setting sail for the island with a mquantity of arms and ammunition.Witnesses today included Police Com misiioner Oliver PhiJJip and an immigration officer. The court heard that MissMcGuire arrived April 15 from nearby Guadeloupe for a holiday visit and was permitted a one month stay.Police also produced in court a tde-Kira Mia McGuire sent the day after r arrival to the Gorde SevieUe in Ontario, Canada.McGuire has already admitted to local police that ahe was sent here on a reconaissance trip in connection with the ' invasion plan.The Canadian nurse, who is conducting her own defence, sat pensively through today's hearing. She did not question any of the witnesses called.Immigration officer Michael Sylvoter in his evidence said that McGuire had on arrival asked to spend lour month*.She said she hoped to get ■ job but did not have the necosary work permit and he only granted her a one-month stay. Sergeant Sylvester said.Others giving evidence today included police constable Julius Antoine.The prosecution team comprises Director of Public Prosecutions, Sylvia Bertrand. Barbadian Queens Counsel j Elliot Mottley and Dr. Lloyd Barnett from Jamaica.The enquiry was adjourned until -tomorrow pending the arrival this evening of a viinra from Bsrbsdcs.
