President of the National Federation of Teachers of Chl-v cago. gave a history of the work of the teachers in that city last night to an audience which filled Mott Memorial Hall, at G4 Madison Avenue. The meeting was under the auspices of the Women’s Henry George League of Manhattan. Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt.and Mrs. Frederick Nathan of the Consumers’ League, with Mrs. .Christine Ross Barker. Henry George, Jr., and James K. Brown were among the speakers. Miss Colbroin presided.Miss Haley first gave a history of tHe manner in which the teachers of Chicago defeated the Harper bill several years before the tax fight when the Chicago University, “ that great whale,” endeavored to swallow the public school system, as Miss Haley said, trying to take away the independence of the system by putting it all under the control of one Superintendent who would ” press a button and the teachers would dance.”“ If you don’t look out,” she continued, discussing the subject of education generally, [** we are going to have the factory system in our education. It is the great danger of this country. It is the great danger because the teachers don’t know it. They chafe under restrictions, but are afraid to speak. I talked with a teacher for half an hour here in New York today, and when I left she said, 4 Please don’t quote me.’ Why didn’t she want me to quote ljer? Because if I had she would lose her head. How can a teacher in such a position educate free American citizens? The public has got to demand freedom of speech for the teachers.” Education is no more considered in the different States than statesmanship in the Legislature. We have great trimmers instead of great educators, men who turn the way the wind blows.”A T TU C UATCI O
