KNIGHTS SON TO WED.BARBADOS HONEYMOON FOR CHESHIRE BRIDE-TO-BEThe Liverpool “Echo” of November 7 says:—“The engagement is announced of Miss Daphne Elizabeth Pickering-Jones, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Pickering-Jones, of Little Sutton, Cheshire, to Mr. John Cod-man Gilbert-Carter, only son of the late Sir Gilbert-Carter, K.C.M.G., R.N., and Lady Gilbert-Carter, of Barbados, B.W.I.The couple met as undergraduates at Cambridge, where Mr. Gilbert-Carter took a degree in engineering, and Miss Pickering-Jones a degree in classic and psychology.Mr. Gilbert-Carter was born in Boston, U.S.A., and was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. His mother belongs to the well-known Codman family of Boston, her ancestor having come over in the Mayflower. She now lives in Barbados. The late Sir Gilbert-Carter, a Devon man, entered the Colonial Office after reaching substantial rank in the Royal Navy. In the ‘90’s he was Governor of Lagos, Nigeria, and later became Governor of the Windward Isles, withheadquarters at Barbados.The bride’s father is well known in Liverpool, having been for many years in the West African trade. He was vice-chairman of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, and he is now living in rer tirement.Mrs. Pickering-Jones is an artist and has for many years been an exhibitor at the Walker Art Gallery.The marriage will take place quietly in London on December 1, and the bride and bridegroom will leave the same day for Barbados to spend Christmas with Lady Gilbert-Carter.”
