’WOMAN SKIPPER IN MOTOR BOAT RACEMrs, H. D. Bacon to Help Sail Yo Ho in Run with Eronel II. to Bermuda. Two motor boats, neither one more than feet over all length, started on a 670-mile run to Bermuda from off the anchorage of the New York Motor Boat Club yesterday morning. Followed by a fleet of craft the little racers plowed down the Hudson River, through the upper and the 1 lower bays, and then out on the waters of the Atlantic, v. here they will pitch and toss for almost three days until the finish : line is sighted off St. David's Head, Bermuda. The craft that started were Vice Com-, modore Cochrane’s flagship Krone! II. of01 the Bensonhurst Yacht Club and \o Ho, which is the property of Henry DouglasBacon.of the Kennebec Yacht Club. The latter boat was the first to cross the starting line, and although she had a lead I of more than ten seconds on Eronel II..* the latter craft had passed Yo Ho before [* Grant’s Tomb was abeam and led the j Maine boat in the long dash down the* river to the sea.The start was made off the anchorage £ of the New York Motor Boat Club at the* foot of West 149th Street and the Hudson } River. The starting signal was to havebeen set at 10 o’clock in the morning, but, as is usual in such races, neither r boat was ready at the scheduled starting* hour. Yo Ho was the first to reach the ; starting line, and she dashed around the ! 'committee tug while the officials were* 'finding the measurement of Eronel II.On hoard of Yo Ho was Mrs. Henry , Touglas Bacon, wife of the owner of the* craft. Mrs. Bacon was one of the crew'! of Yo Ho, and stated that she felt no fear ! regarding tlie danger of the contest. It { Js the first time that a woman ever has tfcttemptid to take part in a power boatrace to Bermuda, although several years ago a member of the fair sex sailed on board of a windjammer in the 670-mile ckish to the Idly Isles. Mrs. Bacon is an excellent sailor, and hxs taken many long ocean trips. She is the possessor of a United States Government license as apilot of steam vessels.Although Mrs. Bacon expressed no fear, flie size of the boats did not promise a pleasant vovage in the mighty Gulf Stream. Eronel II. was the larger. According to Morris M. Whitaker, the measurer. the craft rated 44.46, against 43.02, tr.e rating of Yo Ho. It moans, therefore, that tin* Bensonhurst yacht must allow the Maine craft a handicap of I hour li minutes and 36 seconds over the course. Experts were of the opinion that the time allowance is not enough to give the victory to Yo Ho.Three boats had entered in the contest, but at the last moment Berneyo, the property of Samuel W. Granbery. withdrew. This boat recently won the Philadelphia-to-Havana race, and her owner found it Impossible to take the time away from this bush ss for another long ocean contest. The withdrawal of Berneyo almost ended the struggle, as Vice Commodore Cochrane was not particularly anxious to race against only one craft. Realizing. Jiowever, that Vo Hu had been brought, from Maine for the contest, the Brooklyn \ achtsman stated that he would start.lircnel II. was especially built for the race from designs of Carey, Smith Ferris. She was launched early in the Fpring at Lawley’s yards. South Boston, and since then has been tuning up for the contest. The boat is 43 feet over all 44 tfeet on the water line, 3 feet t Inches draft, and is driven by a 23 horse powerengine. Vice Commodore Cochrane is the skipper. and the balance of the cre^*’ j.5 Capt. William Watt, navigator; u Moffat t, engineer, and J. Woods. J. Brom-fleld. and A. Meigs, all members of theBensonhurst Yacht Club. _Yo Ho also was designed for the Bermuda r.ruggle by the Bath Marine lt;on-id ruction Company. The boat is 46 feet 4 Inches over ail. 43 feet 10 inches on the water line, 10 feet beam, and draws 3 feet r inches of water. She is driven by a special engine designed by her builders. Capt. Bacon is in charge of the cratt. The race that started yesterday was the fourth annual contest to Bermuda ire-first was won by Ailsa Craig In hours find 49 minutes. It was decided in lh. The following year Ailsa Craig again was l he winner, scoring a leg in th»* BennettCup The time was G6 hours 3o minutesfind 46 seconds.
