PROFESSOR OF MICROBIOLOGYDr. Sheila King makes historyDr. Sheila Dorothy King* Head of the De-rirtment of Micro-iology at the University of theWest Indies, Mona,has been appointedProfessor of Microbiology. She is the first woman to be thus appointed in the Faculty of Medicine and only second female professor in the history of the University.Professor King holds the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M B B S ) degrees of the Universuy College of the West Indies (1958) In 1964, she received the Diploma m Bacteriology from the University of London and went on to obtain the MRC Path also from the University of London Just recently, she was awarded the Doctor of Medicine (D M ) degree of the University of London, her thesis being “Patterns of Dengue in Jamaica”The new Professor joined the staff of the University Hospital of the West Indies in January 1959 as House Officer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and served at various times as House Officer in Medicine, Senior House Officer in Paediatrics, and Casualty OfficerIn 1961, she moved to the Department of Micro biology as Resident/Assis tant Lecturer, and nine years larcr, in 1970, was granted indefinite tenure on the sraff of the University Professor King was appointed Head of the Department of Microbiology in 1973, a position which she still holdsOther appointments and responsibilities include being Consultant, Hospital Medical Committee, Director of the WHO Influenza Centre Oairiaica), and Medical Faculty representative on the Advisory Board for the Caribbean Epidemological Centre (CAREC)She has also held the posts of Supervisor ot Typhoid Carrier Surveillance Programme for the Ministry of Health, Jamaica (1973 76), Advisor to the PAHO Committee on Dengue in the Americas and Caribbean Areas (1974), and Member of the Tnnidad Virus Laboratory’s Advisory Board (1974).Professor King’s contribution to the field of Microbiology has been recognised locally and overseas She has received numerous awards to carry out research in the field, including the WHO Study and Travel gram for a course in respiratory and rubella virus infections, Burroughs Welcome grants for clinical and laboratory investigations, as well as grants from the Medical Research Council.Professor King has published extensively in her field, including papers on dengue-like viruses, immunisation against rubella (German measles) and meningitis, which have appeared in several international |oumals Vanous papers have also been presented by her at conferences held throughout the region
